8-Track Tape Restoration

"KERCHUNK"- That familiar sound that let you know the next track was on the way.  Though basically chastised as low quality and laughable by today's standards, there is no denying that this format dominated the music scene in the late 60s and early 70s.

About 8-Track Tapes

William Powell Lear, the inventor of the Lear Jet, invented the 8-track tape in the 1960s.  At this time there were several cartridge-based continuous loop solutions, like the 4-track, but the genius behind Lear was in his marketing of this product.  He developed this technology for automobiles as an alternative to radio listening and had the units standard in all 1966 Fords and then all Chrysler and GM products offered the same.

The 8-track is a 1/4 continuous length of tape that holds 8 tracks running parallel.  Track one and five constitutes track one stereo left and right.  Then two and six...etc.  At the end of the tape there is a piece of foil which signals the tape heads to move 1 slot lower and so forth.

8 Tracks were produced well into the 80s and were a mainstay of auto and portable play for many years until being supplanted by cassettes and later CDs.

Tape Restoration Techniques

Like record restoration, there are countless articles and opinions on how to best preserve and archive your precious and slowly dying audio tape collection.  The following hints are mostly agreed upon and safe to try.

To Bake Or Not To Bake

Tape Warpage...How to Fix It.

8-Track Specific Techniques

Though most tapes suffer from the same ailments as they age and deteriorate (hiss, warpage, weather issues, etc.), because the 8-track had an unusual track changer built into its tape mechanism, it has its own special problems that you may encounter.  We offer a full assortment of 8-track repair supplies that should eliminate most issues.  Plus, we offer a great new DVD that helps you repair and restore your treasured 8-Tracks!

Probably the number one annoyance with 8-Track tapes was the loud noise you heard each and every time your 8-Track player sensed the foil on the tape and switched tracks.  This could come at any time...including in the middle of a song.  No fear, using our Fast Editor, you simply highlight the Kerchunk and the overlapping audio and do a "cut" and you should easily eliminate this well known pest.

Fast Edit:  The End of "KerChunk!"

Of course, the beauty of a digital editing system is the speed with which you can perform simple cut and paste editing.  The Fast Edit mode in DC SIX takes this a step further, by allowing you to not only edit instantly (without waiting for the computer), but also saves each edit in the Fast Edit History window...if you perform an edit and aren't crazy with the results, you simply click on the previous entry and your last edit is undone and removed.  Every edit is completed before your finger leaves the mouse and you only wait for the computer once you're completely satisfied with what you're hearing.  It's a great new feature and further simplifies your editing procedure.
